Variable reward
The slot-machine trick — unpredictable rewards — that makes checking your phone compulsive by design.
Variable reward (variable-ratio reinforcement) is the reinforcement schedule in which rewards arrive unpredictably — the mechanism of slot machines, and the most compulsion-forming schedule known to behavioral science. Pull the lever: probably nothing, maybe something wonderful.
Every feed refresh, notification chime, and pull-to-refresh gesture runs the same schedule: maybe a like, maybe nothing. Dopamine responds to anticipation rather than outcome, so the check itself is the hit. This is why moderation fails against engineered products, and why removing the slot machine from your pocket outperforms promising yourself you will pull the lever less often.
